Cribbage discard calculator

Put in the six cards you were dealt and say whose crib it is. Every one of the fifteen throws is ranked by what the keep scores over all 46 cuts, plus or minus what the crib is worth.

What you getall 15 throws, ranked, with a reason for the best one.

Put in the six cards you were dealt. For each of the 15 ways to throw two, the keep is counted with every card that could be cut, all 46 of them, and the two you throw are valued in the crib from our top level playing itself. The best throw comes with its reason; the table shows the rest.

How the ranking works

You were dealt six cards and must throw two into the crib. That leaves 15 ways to choose. For each, the calculator counts the four you keep with every card that could be cut, all 46 of them, and averages the result. That is the Hand column, and it is exact.

The Crib column is what the two cards you throw are worth in the crib, measured from our top level playing itself, both players throwing as well as it can. It is added when the crib is yours and taken away when it is theirs. Net is the sum, and the list is sorted by it. The app’s throw hint and its top level use the same values.

Common mistake

Throwing a 5 into the other player’s crib. A five makes fifteen with any of the 16 cards worth ten, so it is the card most likely to score there.

The same six, dealer or not

Whose crib it is can change the throw. With 5 5 5 9 J K:

  • As the dealer, throw 9 J into your own crib. Net 20.20.
  • As the pone, the player who does not deal, throw 9 K into your opponent’s crib. Net 12.45.

The dealer keeps the king and gives the crib the jack, which can score nobs there. The pone keeps the jack, for nobs in the hand, and gives away the king. Open this hand in the calculator.

What it leaves out

The play. A keep of low cards pegs differently from a keep of ten-cards, and the board position changes what you need. The calculator sticks to the count.

In the app, the throw hint says in one sentence why those two cards go. The same values pick for the top level.
